WE WILL is a group of young people aged 14-18 who want to create a new generation of Youth Mental Health First Aid trained people leading change.
The group was started by young people in Maryport with membership now spreading throughout the local area and open to anyone.
They have joined together to campaign for change in the way that youth mental health is dealt with in their schools, communities, families and wider social circles.
This short video introduces the project and documents some of their achievements so far:
From their research they have identified that they would like to:
- Increase the number of visible and approachable Youth Mental Health First Aid trained pupils, staff, governors and parents in schools, the community and the home.
- Create safe spaces where young people can access help.
- Create and deliver a communications campaign that informs young people of the help that is available to them and how to access it.
In May 2018, as part of their research, the group organised an inter-schools conference. Watch our video to find out more.
The group were delighted to be shortlisted in the Golden Apples 2018 Education Awards category for Best Community Initiative – and were even more thrilled to win.
With the help of @CumbriaFilmStudios the group have recently completed a short campaign film called ‘Listen’ highlighting the importance of listening to understand, rather than listening to reply.
If you are a young person who would like to get involved, or an agency or organisation that would like to support the project, please get in touch with Kate Whitmarsh on 01900 819575.
