Name:

Ann-Marie Steel

Role within the ELT:  I am the Volunteer Leader

What do you do there?

My role is to help the Ewanrigg Local Trust residents and partners increase participation in voluntary activities and help voluntary groups to be sustainable.

I will be the first point of contact for anyone wanting to volunteer with the trust and implementing an ongoing recruitment strategy aimed at identifying new volunteers. I will work with them to match the volunteers to the appropriate voluntary opportunities, ensuring they have the confidence, training, skills and support to help them enjoy and thrive in their role.

I will be supporting local groups, businesses and organisations in the Ewanrigg area to identify existing and new opportunities for volunteering within their work.

I will be providing one to one support for residents who are interested in volunteering, but who need some support to overcome their own obstacles to getting involved.

I will be working to raise the profile of volunteers and volunteering in Ewanrigg in order to inspire others and increase pride in the community.

I will be working alongside our Key strengths worker, Sam, to help anyone that isn’t quite ready for employment, but is ready to be involved in projects, through volunteering.

Why did you want to get involved?

I have myself volunteered and also worked with other voluntary organisations, Girl Guiding and NCT, for over 20 years in the area, delivering training to and supporting volunteers.

I have enjoyed seeing the sense of achievement and pride the volunteers have after being involved. Volunteers have made new friends and developed job opportunities due to their volunteering.

This role gave me the chance to use many transferrable skills that I have gained through my own voluntary roles to help this fantastic, resident led project, work towards achieving success.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I have been in post now for 3 weeks and have already met so many fantastic residents and associated groups within the community. They have a huge passion for what they are working to achieve and I am really enjoying working with them.

What do you aim to achieve in your job?

I want the residents of Ewanrigg, both young and old, to feel a sense of pride and achievement through volunteering. I want volunteering to part of their lives, so that it’s seen to be ‘cool’ to volunteer.

I want to improve communication and the profile of volunteering in Ewanrigg so that residents know about opportunities that are available to them.

The trust has some fantastic ideas for where it would like to be in the future and helping them to get there is going to be an exciting challenge.
